The Growth Ledger

About

Every line in a ledger has a story behind it

The Growth Ledger was started by Ryan Manuel, a Washington small business owner, because the owners next door to each other too often never meet. Here is where the name came from, and where he came from.

Why "The Growth Ledger"?

People have kept ledgers for as long as they've done business, from clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia to the handwritten books of Renaissance merchants. For centuries, a ledger sat on the shopkeeper's desk, recording sales, expenses, and debts, line by line. Today, it mostly lives in the cloud. The tools have changed, but the purpose is much the same: helping owners understand how their business is doing.

The best part of a ledger is that every line has a story behind it. A tough decision. A late night. A customer who left. A lesson learned the hard way. Those stories are where the real insight is, and they're worth sharing.

That's the idea behind The Growth Ledger. It's a place where Washington small business owners can connect, learn from each other, and hear from professionals who understand the challenges of running a business.

Over time, I hope we build a ledger of our own, filled with the ideas, relationships, and shared experiences that help us grow together.

Meet Ryan

My name is Ryan Manuel, and my interest in business started with a book my mom read to me when I was young: What Do People Do All Day? by Richard Scarry. It showed how the characters worked together to build homes, delivered mail, ran shops, and spent their earnings at other businesses in town. Looking back, it was a lesson in how businesses support each other and their community. Basically, a little economics lesson before I could even read.

Business ownership also ran in the family. One grandfather was a lawyer who also owned a trucking company, while my other grandparents owned a small shop and a pet shop. After retiring from a 20 year career in the Navy, my father started a landscape lantern and plant business that he continued for another 27 years. Starting my own business in 2005 felt pretty natural. Today, I'm still a small business owner, working as an in home personal trainer while building a career in business brokerage.

One thing that became clear while running a business was how easily work could take over. Even after the day was done, there was always work to think about. Networking sounded great, but finding time to step away and attend an event was difficult. Sometimes, even the owners right next door were people you barely knew because everyone was so busy with their own business.

That's why I created The Growth Ledger. It's a place for Washington small business owners to get to know each other, share their story, ask questions, and hear from professionals who can help. Richard Scarry showed me that every business in town depends on the others. The Growth Ledger is my way of building a virtual Busytown, where those connections come a little easier.
